Panel Session: IBM - Ideas to Create Smarter Communities

IBM Smarter Transportation

The economic growth of urban centers is dependent on the efficient movement of people, vehicles, freight and goods. These transportation systems have a huge impact on quality of life. At stake is a range of essential issues, from personal and economic productivity, to environmental sustainability, to social cohesion, to the ‘personality’ of a city. The discussion of transportation in a smarter city must encompass both the many modes of possible movement within a city, but also movement between the city and world around it. Planning holistically across a city’s entire transportation system will require a move beyond traditional solutions of steel, asphalt and concrete. Rather, integrating available and developing technologies -- cameras, sensors, dynamic signage, signals, fiber optics, network connectivity and analytics -- as vital elements of a smarter transportation system will be needed. This session will examine relationships across the entire system, including elements of other systems touched by it (supply chains, businesses, where and how people live and work, etc.) and how to create transportation systems that are adaptable, responsive, sustainable and economically sound.

Launched in 2008, Living Water Smart, British Columbia's Water Plan is the B.C. government's vision and commitment to ensure our water stays healthy and secure. The plan focuses on improving water laws and information to deal with pressures on water, preparing communities for climate change, and encouraging British Columbians to choose to live water smart. To help achieve Living Water Smart targets and actions, the Province and partners have developed a suite of tools. These tools are all web-based and accessible to anyone with a computer. They are intended to support new approaches to water management. They can be applied on-the-ground by land and water practitioners. They will collectively influence practitioner behaviour and facilitate informed decision-making with respect to 'designing with nature' and building greener communities. The suite of tools that enable water-centric planning and water smart choices include the Water Balance Model, Water Conservation Calculator, Water Bucket Website, Agriculture Irrigation Scheduling Calculator, Landscape Irrigation Scheduling Calculator and OKIM (Okanagan Irrigation Management).

Fuel Cells As Part Of Our Future Energy Landscape

Hydrogen fuel cell technology has been in development for many years, with considerable R&D effort expended to improve performance and reduce cost. In the past 5-years considerable advancement has been made in performance of this technology, to the point where it exhibits high reliability, has been productized and is now supporting a variety of innovative applications on a commercial basis. Though still in the early market adoption stage, hydrogen fuel cell solutions are being rolled out for stationary power applications (such as distributed generation & supplemental power) as well as motive power applications (such as mass transit buses & material handling equipment). Together with other clean energy solutions, fuel cells are proving to be a viable and exciting energy choice for a clean future.

Grow Green, Grow Up, Grow Profits

The world's current agricultural production system uses resources ineffi-ciently and is, in the long run, unsustainable. VertiCroptm is the world's leading computer assisted vertical growing technology, a way of growing large amounts of nutritionally superior food in a small area using less land, less energy, and less water, than conventional agriculture.

VertiCroptm is paradigm changing because it is the first technology that makes it possible to grow food on a commercial scale in virtually any loca-tion, including locally within cities. It was named one of the best ideas of 2009 by Time magazine and one of the best sustainable companies in the world by LAUNCH, a joint effort by NASA, US AID, US Department of State, and NIKE to identify solutions to global environmental challenges.
